Power of the People

I’m non-political. I was disenfranchised a long time ago. But I’ve had this kind of New Age idea and I’d like to hear your thoughts on it. Or be silent and join me.

There was research some time ago about how the power of prayer could affect social behavior on a broad scale. The study I’m thinking of showed reduced violence coinciding with a time when a large group of people focused on making it happen. Now I don’t believe in “prayer”.  I call it focused consciousness, but it’s the same thing if you call it meditation or just directed thought.

The problem I’m looking at is the upcoming election. The candidates that are presenting themselves all seem to have very limited perspectives. I don’t want to be governed by a President who has extremely focused religious, moral or economic views. Call me an idealist but I think a President should have the interests of the entire country as his/her main focus.

Voting is the process but without the best candidates, it just won’t help. And whatever you may think about the current candidates, there’s no denying that we need some very inspired leadership to raise us out of the economic and social problems we’re experiencing.

So what I’m thinking is this. If you agree about this, just a little, join together with me and all the other anonymous “you” out there. For five minutes a day focus on bringing to this country leaders from the next election who can provide the basis for a recovery from this state we find ourselves in. 2:00 pm New York is 1:00 pm Chicago, noon in Denver and 11:00 am in L.A. Climb to the rooftop. Retreat to the cellar. Retire to the restroom or join together in the conference room. Focus for just 5 minutes on wanting the very best for this country.

It is said that we get the government we deserve. Now obviously no one person makes up the government. And you may not agree with me on who is best for what role in government. But if you agree with me that the power of the people is in unity. And if you agree that unified thought and desire can generate change. Then join with me to focus on bringing to this nation the leaders we need. And maybe, with a unified focus, we can create something even better than we deserve.

Send a link to this blog to everyone you know. Or put the idea into your own words. But believe with me that if enough people join in, then we can make something wonderful happen.

Be Bold

Dream and Be Bold.

This one hangs over my desk. It’s a quote from Goethe.

I’m not a bold person, but a lot of it comes out in my art. It feels good.

The center block is crazy quilt, a collage of satin, brocade, silk, chiffon with sparkly stuff. Purple and yellow. It doesn’t get much bolder!

This is a quote from Gandhi. I guess it’s like boldness. You have to be it to make it happen.

They’re good thoughts. I hope you can use them.

Live Large

I’ve got something to say.

My focus these days is on sharing ideas. Things I want you to think about… If you’re not already.

Sing, Dance, Love, Live. You’ve seen this one around but have you really thought about living as if today was your last day? Last chance to get it right? To say what you need to have heard? It’s a really big concept!

And the concept of letting go, what an idea! All the things you can’t do, can’t fix, can’t change, absolutely can’t control. Think about how much energy you’d have left over if you let go of all of those!

Just some stuff to think about.

FYI about the process.  I’ve gone back into my stash and started pulling out UFOs.  Unfinished objects, samples, experiments, proof of design concepts, all kinds of things that were too cool to part with but haven’t had a home till now.  I’m looking at them to underscore some of the philosophical things and interesting quotes that have been accumulating in my mind.  It’s like archeology in the studio.

And I’m looking at these unfinished things as a canvas to try some of the really new concepts I’ve been working on too.  It’s like basic research in any field.  It brings out really unexpected synergy.

Introduction to Tarot

A Zen Approach.

I spend a lot of my time seeking. I think most people do but they don’t have the time to be aware of it. Anyhow, I’ve been feeling like “Hey! Can’t somebody just give me a hint about which way to go!”. I’m not looking for the answer to life-the Universe-and everything. Just a little hint in the chaos.

I met someone on the Internet who reads Tarot. She seems to be an intelligent lady. So I’ve been thinking maybe a reading could give me the hint I’ve been looking for. Naturally I put it off because “that’s weird woo-woo”. I’m a skeptic about a lot of New Age things. But the idea kept calling to me. And in the way of these things, the Universe sent an answer. A friend who I respect happened to say she reads for herself and gave me the address to a site, Osho Zen Tarot

These readings are not about the past or the future. They’re more like a hint or inspiration to think about as it might apply to the present, what’s happening today, right now. I believe in reality; that the only place creative energy exists is in the present. It’s where you actually build your life.

My only objection to the readings I’ve gotten is how unnervingly accurate they are. I can see how easy it would be to become a disciple. But I’m not looking for a new path. As I said, just a hint. Sure I want to believe. I want to think that there’s some Universal benign force guiding me. Maybe it’s all in my head. But this seems to be truth, at least for me.

Embrace the Energy of Reality

Embrace the hour,

Embrace the day,

Embrace the energy that makes easy my way.

I’m still working so hard I feel like I’m going around in circles.  But I’m also working on being very mindful of the energy of reality.  The only thing that matters, the only energy that exists, is right now, in this very moment.  The past is done and gone.  Worry about the future is just reaching into the unknown and bringing back failure.  This moment of reality holds the only energy I can use to create.  This moment is the only place I have to make a difference, to grow my life and focus energy on making my future what I want it to be.

The bowl is finished.  It may be spectacular.  It may be weird.  It took weeks in the studio because each row had to dry before I could apply the next one.  But I think it’s like all art and life.  You never know what has really been created till it’s released to go out into the world on its own.  Is that what living is all about?  That we don’t know the results of our actions until we take them and see them reflected in reality?

Use the energy that exists in the moment, since that’s the only place it exists, and believe that you’re creating something good.  That begins to sound like creating and building a life is all about intentions.  Do our intentions create our lives?!  Now there’s something to think about.

New Starts and an Open Heart

Each day is a new start
To embrace my world,
To open my heart.

Life is throwing some very tough things at me right now and I refuse to let it get me down. Focusing on the negative drains my energy and leaves me with no resources to deal with the obstacles life presents.

Positive affirmations and cognitive behavioral therapy are two ends of the spectrum of names to call what I’m doing. Mostly it’s a matter of turning things around, of seeing the world in a positive way. Or of letting go if there’s nothing I can do.

Turning obstacles into challenges is one of my biggest hurdles. I’m pretty techie but there are “challenges” in having three internet shops and a new blog that keep trying to overwhelm me. Instead of being reduced to tears, which is the easiest way out for me, I do what small things I can and don’t even look at the really big things. One of my small things is lerning “SEO”.  Six months ago I didn’t even know what it is. (I’m sure someone who knows more will object to my definition, but basically it’s a matter of describing what I put on the internet, the art in my shops and the subjects in this blog, in the terms that other people will use to search for them.) But by learning a little bit every week I’ve gotten pretty good, I hope. It’s all about taking baby steps and the big job gets done.

Positive affirmations are my mainstay. But they have a secret. While it’s great to repeat some wonderful and inspiring phrase, it has no power unless I feel it. It’s all about changing the feelings inside me so that I can really believe these cute little phrases I repeat. I’m programming my own mind to think about myself and my world differently by putting positive feeling and emotion into these thoughts. Simple repetition serves a purpose when I’m trying to block out something horrible, real or imagined, that’s running around in my brain. But when I really listen to what I’m saying, I start to feel the truth of it. I may not believe it yet but with focus and repetition it becomes real. It’s just as easy to dwell on what a wonderful person I am as to focus on what a slug I am.

Bottom line is that it’s more fun and there’s more energy in life by focusing on positive things. Things like, okay this is really tough but I’m doing my best and that’s pretty darn good. It may not be done at the end of the day but I know I did my best. And when I know I’m doing my best, I have more energy to keep trying. If I stop trying, if I just lay down and quit and say I can’t do this, then I’ll have nothing left. I might as well crawl into a hole and pull it in after me. If I keep working to convince myself that I’m a really good and talented person then I have a chance someone will agree with me. If I keep reaching out and offering my best to the world then just maybe, somehow, someday, the world will return the favor.

So that’s what helps me get through the day. If this works for you or you have other constructive ideas, let me know. The more we share the more we grow!
